Bio2Watt - Sustainable Biogas from Waste in South Africa

Bio 2 Watt - Biogas

Client: Bio2Watt
Period: 2011 - 2014

Bio2Watt is a young South-African company that sets up biogas projects in which waste from the agricultural and cattle sector and other organic waste is used for energy production. Founder Sean Thomas is convinced that creating sustainable biomass chains is a prerequisite for successful business management.

Dutch Global Sustainable Biomass Fund
Partners for Innovation has assisted Sean Thomas in obtaining a grant from the Dutch Global Sustainable Biomass Fund to reach this goal and will develop and execute a sustainability analysis for the project.

The Bronkhorstspruit Biogas Plant is producing, since October 2015,  4,6 MW power for the BMW Rosslyn factory and into the national grid. Bio2Watt is an independent commercial enterprise with an initial life cycle of 20 years, it will contribute to diversifying the South African energy mix away from coal. The project has resulted in the creation of long-term direct and indirect employment in peri-urban South Africa, which currently experiences high levels of unemployment.
