Period: 2010 - 2013
June 2010 Desso Eco-Innovation project: ‘Euro Cradle to Cradle® Carpet Chains’ was started. Desso is a leading manufacturer of carpets, carpet tiles and artificial grass mats with offices throughout Europe, the United States, Asia, Latin America, Africa, Middle East and Australia.
With the support of Partners for Innovation, Desso is implementing a carpet collection and recycling scheme in six European countries. This scheme is based on the Cradle to Cradle® philosophy and aims to close the commodity chain. Life cycle and cradle to cradle assesments are used to determine the environmental benefits.
The Refinity® pilot plan will be used for sorting and separating of carpet waste into light and heavy fractions. The light fractions will be pure enough to be depolymerised from nylon 6 into Caprolactam. The heavy fractions will be recycled in road surface applications.
The project receives financial support from the European Eco-Innovation programme. Launched in 2008, the Eco-innovation initiative is part of the EU’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (EIP), set up to support innovation among SMEs and to improve their competitiveness.
The eco-innovation initiative bridges the gap between research and the market. It helps good ideas for innovative products, services and processes that protect the environment become fully-fledged commercial prospects, ready for use by business and industry. In doing so the initiative not only helps the EU meet its environmental objectives but also boosts economic growth.
