Daf Trucks - Ecodesign training

Client: DAF Trucks NV
Period: 2007 - 2011

DAF Trucks N.V. - a subsidiary of PACCAR - is a leading truck producer in Europe. DAF Trucks takes environmental care very seriously. Since 1995, the company has an official environmental policy statement and in 1999, a separate policy statement was added for ecodesign.

Objective
All design engineers working at DAF Trucks have to know the concepts and tools of ecodesign. In 2007 and 2008 Partners for Innovation trained more than 70 engineers of DAF trucks to apply ecodesign tools through practical exercises. After the two-day training the product developers were able to apply the tools to their own products. Two facilitators of Partners for Innovation executed the training.

Environmental Performance Indicators
As part of the training a scorecard is developed, to improve the environmental impact of DAF projects prior to the submission of the project, and afterwards at the outcome of the project. The scorecard contains eight Environmental Performance Indicators, such as: fuel efficiency, recycling, material selection, production processes, electrical consumption, (CO2)-emissions and noise.

EcoDesign Award
Part of the training was the “Ecodesign Award”, presented by Pieter de Grauw, director Operations and Environment. For this Award all participants worked on a ecodesign case out of their own practice. The training resulted in several promising ideas for substantial reduction of the environmental impact and the costs of existing components and products. Several of these ideas are aready introduced in practice and others are studied further for the longer term.
