Sustainability award for Siem Haffmans
On September 7th, ‘Sustainable Tuesday’, our colleague Siem Haffmans received a sustainability award from the Dutch Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms. Huizinga. This award is for persons who have committed themselves for many years to achieve a more sustainable society. The jury said about Siem: “Siem is described by fans and colleagues as the silent force behind the promotion and development of a sustainable economy. The jury very much appreciates the fact that Siem for many years has been able to successfully commercialise sustainable products in an innovative way.”

EcoDesign and Cradle to Cradle at Vanderlande Industries
Partners for Innovation supported Vanderlande Industries with the development of a new type of conveyer belt, following the EcoDesign and Cradle to Cradle principles. Vanderlande Industries is a global player active in luggage handling systems at airports. With the new conveyer belt, Vanderlande expects to realise big improvements in energy efficiency and environmental impact of the materials used.

Financing opportunities for local climate policy
Partners for Innovation made an inventory and analysis of Dutch and EU subsidy programmes for Climate policy for the cooperation of the five biggest cities in Brabant and the province of Brabant. Conclusions:
1. in the short term UKP, IEE and ELENA are very interesting;
2. in the long term interesting are ‘Innovatieagenda Energie’, ‘The European Electricity Grid Initiative’ and ‘The Smart Cities Initiative’.

Environmental friendly weed control
Weed control on pavements currently still involves the use of herbicides. The company EMPAS from Veenendaal has developed an environmental friendly alternative: the ‘ESCHPAS’. This very energy efficient appliance eradicates weed with hot water. Partners for Innovation has assisted EMPAS in applying for the Dutch ‘Milieulijst’ (environmental list). Appliances on the list are subject to fiscal advantages for the purchaser which results in lower purchasing costs.

Greenhouse gas footprint of biofuel chain.
As a result of the new European guidelines for sustainability of biofuels, certification has become very important for this sector. Jatropha Alliance and Partners for Innovation are preparing feedstock producers for the certification process, placing them in front positions to anticipate the developments in the legislation and the market. Recently they presented their first results, on September 27th during the workshop "Sustainable Access to Sustainable Energy" in Moshi, Tanzania, and on October 6th at Jatropha World 2010 in Rotterdam. Cooperation with Allard Pheifer
Allard Pheifer and Partners for Innovation have started cooperating in the field of standards related to corporate social reporting (CSR) and environmental management. Allard is a very experienced consultant in this area. Allard has been managing the implementation of quality, environmental management and CSR standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and the international standard for social responsibility, ISO 26000) for various clients.

Sustainable heating of an inflatable tennis sports hall
Paulien Hoogvorst studies Science, Business and Innovation at the Free University of Amsterdam. On 1 September she started working on her BSc thesis at Partners for Innovation, which involves research into novel concepts of heating an inflatable tennis sports hall.
