Product Service System Innovation

Client: Europese Commissie - DG Research
Period: 2003 - 2004

The Methodology for Product Service Systems (MEPSS) project aimed to develop a methodology and toolkit to assist companies in finding, designing, developing and implementing complex innovations in which products and services are combined. MEPSS is conducted by a consortium of eight partners, partly financed by the European Commission under the 5th Framework Programme for RTD. Partners for Innovation was included as a subcontractor in the project team by the co-ordinator of the project, PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Product service systems offer opportunities for companies to develop profitable and sustainable new product service combinations. Key factors for the success of such a system are:

  1. To deliver a unique (mix of) offer(s) and to create exceptional value for customers (quality, emotion and convenience)
  2. To improve contacts with customers, for instance by offering customised product service solutions (time and place, e.g. modern means of communication)
  3. Access to expensive products by pay per use schemes (sharing, renting, leasing)
  4. Reduction of negative impacts on the environment.

Smart services are becoming more and more important from an economic perspective. Companies who offer product service systems are usually more successful than their competitors. However, these systems are demanding a completely new approach from companies. The manual and web tool that were developed in the MEPSS project aim to familiarise companies with this new, powerful concept.

The consultants of Partners for Innovation have been involved in an important part of the activities in the project:

  • Project co-ordination
  • Methodology development (innovation model, stakeholder management)
  • Manual (authoring various chapters and final editing)
  • Web tool (co-ordination and realisation)
