Oxfam Novib - Scaling up Agroforestry in northern Nigeria

Agroforestry Nigeria

Client: Oxfam Novib Nigeria
Period: 2013 - 2014

Partners for Innovation has been collaborating with Oxfam Novib Nigeria to develop a competitive bid for climate-smart agriculture and Agroforestry in northern Nigeria.

From the mid-1980s onwards, enterprising farmers, World Vision, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the African Regreening Initiative have been promoting Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration. Particularly in Niger this Agroforestry method has been adopted on a large-scale.

Nearby states in Nigeria, such as Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina and others, are also ecologically fit to apply this technology. However, until now, farmers in these areas practice it for only 2% of its full potential.

To enable women, men, young people and pastoralists to benefit from investments in Agroforestry, Oxfam Novib in Nigeria wants to play a role in scaling-up Agroforestry practices.

Partners for Innovation carried out a feasibility study on Oxfam’s possible engagement in the field. Frank van Schoubroeck from Partners for Innovation made a capacity analysis of Oxfam and documented lessons learned on the proposal development process. As a side-product, they developed a project proposal for the EU delegation in Nigeria.
